My Digital Marketing Journey

What started as a simple curiosity about marketing turned into a full-blown passion and career that’s taken me through startups, agencies, international clients, failed ventures, and finally building something of my own. This isn’t just a list of companies I’ve worked at—this is a story of growth, burnout, bounce-back, and breakthroughs. If you’re someone who’s figuring it out, switching paths, or just looking for raw, real-world experiences in digital marketing, I hope my journey gives you something valuable.

Some Venture I don't want to name - Digital Marketing Expert

After leaving Taskmills, I walked into what I thought would be another exciting chapter in my digital marketing journey—joining a real estate company in Nepal that was in search of a digital marketing expert. But what followed wasn’t a career boost—it was a harsh reality check on toxic work culture.

Unlike Taskmills, which at least made an effort to respect personal boundaries, this company operated like a productivity prison. The hours were supposed to be 9 to 6, but in reality, the day never really ended. Meetings were arbitrarily set at 7, 8, even 9 PM, long after the official hours. Employees were scared to speak up, not just because of fear of losing their job, but because the salary itself was never on time.

Despite giving my all during work hours and driving impressive conversion and ad performance within just a month, my decision to leave the office on time one day was met with a call from the MD, who aggressively questioned my commitment. I calmly responded that I do care about the company, but I value my personal time even more—something every workplace should respect.

The next day, I resigned.

Ironically, the company didn’t want to let go. I received repeated calls from the MD and the Executive Assistant urging me to return, even offering to keep me as a freelancer. But by then, I had made my decision. No performance metric was worth sacrificing my mental health and personal values.

This experience didn’t just break me temporarily—it built me back smarter. I realized how crucial a healthy work culture is, and made a mental note that if I ever build my own company, I’ll do everything to ensure no one feels the way I did—unheard, overworked, and undervalued.

Sometimes, the best professional growth doesn’t come from success—it comes from knowing when to walk away.

BD Malta - Digital Marketing Freelancer

After stepping away from a toxic work culture in Nepal, I took on a freelancing role with BD Electronics, a Malta-based company. The pay was significantly better than what most Nepali agencies offer, and the idea of working with an international team felt like a promising turn in my career. And to be fair—it was, in some ways.

My role was primarily focused on content writing and SEO optimization, often using AI tools like ChatGPT. The work was intense—we were expected to produce and optimize 5 to 8 pieces of content daily, along with proofreading. The scale was aggressive, and while it sharpened my speed, research, and SEO refinement skills, something didn’t sit right.

As time went on, me and my fellow Nepali freelancer Prabriti Basnet (a truly talented digital marketer doing amazing in her career) started noticing red flags. The company had a shady reputation online, with lawsuits, scam allegations, and shady reviews flooding the internet. It didn’t feel sustainable.

And just as we anticipated, on Valentine’s Day, I received the call—the company was shutting down. The MD promised an experience letter that never came.

Despite its dodgy operations, BD Electronics gave me something invaluable—the experience of working with a diverse global team. I had the chance to collaborate with professionals from Malta, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sweden, and more. It exposed me to how digital teams function across borders, and strengthened my ability to adapt, communicate, and manage tasks across different time zones and cultures.

It was a chaotic, short-lived chapter—but one that added global flavor to my professional journey.

Building Something of My Own — The Story Behind Avisu Bags

After years of working for others—some inspiring, some draining—I reached a point in life where I craved ownership. I wanted to build something that was mine, where I could give my 100% not just for a job title or salary, but for a vision I truly believed in. I’ve had failed ventures with friends in the past, but I also gained priceless lessons from each experience. This time, I was ready—with more maturity, clarity, and purpose.

So, I sat down with my wife, Sushmita Maharjan, a fellow digital marketer with years of experience in Nepal's digital space. We shared not just a personal bond but a professional synergy, and we both wanted to channel that energy into something meaningful.

Around the same time, I also partnered with Avishek Shrestha, my MBA colleague and a dynamic personality with deep roots in Nepal’s share market and digital marketing industry. More importantly, Avishek came from a family business of bags in Butwal, with years of experience in selling them. His background brought the product expertise we needed.

Together, we launched Avisu Bags—an online-first brand focused on providing affordable, stylish, and quality handbags for women. We poured our combined knowledge into market research, product selection, branding, and digital strategy. Every decision—be it the style of the bag or the tone of an ad copy—was rooted in our shared passion and experience.

Though we’re still in the early phase and currently operate online only, Avisu Bags has been performing well. More than sales or metrics, what truly excites me is this: for the first time, I’m working on something that’s mine, alongside people I deeply respect and trust.

This isn’t just a business. It’s a manifestation of everything I’ve learned—about marketing, people, resilience, and self-worth.

The Birth of Avisu Marketing — A Homegrown Digital Marketing Agency from Nepal

While working on Avisu Bags, we realized something powerful: the three of us—me, Sushmita Maharjan, and Avishek Shrestha—weren’t just building a product-based business. We were also building something greater through our skills in digital marketing. Each of us had been in the field for years, helping brands grow, run campaigns, analyze data, create content, and generate sales. So we thought—why not channel all that experience and expertise into something bigger?

That’s how Avisu Marketing was born—a Nepal-based digital marketing agency operating under the same umbrella as Avisu Bags. With a clear vision and complementary skills, we started building a service-oriented business to help other brands grow just like we were doing with our own.

Our goal was simple:
Help Nepali businesses grow with effective, ethical, and modern digital marketing strategies.

Whether it's SEO, social media, content marketing, paid ads, or brand consulting, we now help a variety of clients from diverse industries achieve tangible results. And the best part? We’re doing it from Nepal, for Nepal.

At a time when many are leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad, we’ve made a conscious decision to create opportunities within Nepal. With the right mindset, tools, and dedication, we truly believe that a fulfilling, impactful, and successful future is possible here.

We’re not just building an agency. We’re building a movement—a belief that Nepali talent doesn’t always have to look beyond its borders to make something big.

Have a project in mind? Let’s get to work.
